Simple Strategies to Avoid the Flu
Each flu season, thousands of people from across the country are bedridden due to catching the influenza virus. Although the flu is very contagious, there are some effective ways to minimize the likelihood of catching it. Here are some proven tips to help ward off the flu virus.
Sanitize the hands
While the flu virus can be transmitted through the air, contaminated hands are also a major contributor. Washing the hands as much as possible will help to reduce the number of germs on the skin. When washing the hands, be sure to wash them thoroughly for a minimal of 20 seconds.
Get the flu vaccine
Although the flu vaccine does not guarantee that a person will not catch the flu, it drastically decreases their risk. Children and older adults are especially at risk of succumbing to the flu. For people that are not unable to take a flu shot, a nasal spray is also available. The flu virus frequently mutates, so the vaccine must be taken every year. Most health insurance companies will pay for the vaccine.
Eat healthy
The health of a person’s immune system depends heavily on the intake of the necessary nutrients. Eating a well-balanced diet is a good way to get all of the required vitamins. Vitamin D deficiency is very common, so a supplement may need to be taken.
Exercise
Working out on a routine basis definitely helps to strengthen the immune system. A good rule of thumb is to exercise at least three times a week.
