Do you think buying a $75 toothbrush is crazy? Electric toothbrushes can be costly, but dentists recognize that using one of these is the best thing you can do at home. They aren’t 100% effective, but they are better than a normal brush. Choose a model with multiple heads and a generous warranty.  Did you know that the sequence that you eat your foods in can play a role in whether or not you develop cavities? Eating sugary foods such as cake alone is much worse for your teeth, than if you eat the cake after a meal. Don’t eat sugary foods alone, always eat them with other foods.

Sticky foods are terrible for teeth, but that isn’t just sugary gums or candies. In fact, bananas carry a ton of sugar and will stick to your teeth, leading to problems. French fries carry the same hazard, plus they come with unhealthy fats and tons of sodium. Try to avoid both if you can’t brush right after eating.  Eat more crunchy vegetables. Vegetables like carrots and celery contain nutrients and vitamins that help your teeth and gums. Not only that, but they also help to clean your teeth. Eating them helps to rid your teeth of food debris and plaque. They work very much like natural tooth brushes.

When you brush your teeth, set a timer for two minutes to ensure you do it for long enough. Keep the brush itself at 45-degrees to ensure it gets beneath the gums and between the teeth. Always make your way around the mouth in the same direction so you never miss any teeth.  If you’re suffering from diabetes, you need to have good dental hygiene. You have a higher risk of mouth infections when you have diabetes, especially gum and periodontal disease. Painful chewing issues come along with periodontal disease. Additionally, periodontal sufferers can have tooth loss. Having gum disease can contribute to problems with your bodies glucose levels, so it is best to have good dental hygiene and see your dentist regularly.

If you are going to drink or eat something that is acidic, try to rinse your mouth out with water once you are done. Rinsing with water will help to remove the acid from your food or drink. If the acid is allowed to stay on your teeth, your enamel will start to wear down.

If you have braces or partials, you should consider using an oral irrigator to help keep your teeth clean. An oral irrigator should be used in addition to regular flossing and brushing. The oral irrigator effectively flushes food particles from between your teeth and brackets by using pressurized water.  Don’t forget to floss. A lot of people don’t floss because they don’t think it is important, but flossing is essential to good dental care. Make sure you floss before you brush, and you will see a difference in how much plaque forms. Flossing truly is a worthwhile task if you want to have healthy teeth.  Be wary of hard foods that can inflict damage to your teeth, like lollipops, popcorn kernels, taffy, or hard candy. These foods can also damage partials, fillings, and other dental work. Furthermore, popcorn kernels may get caught in the gums and cause inflammation.
